Privacy policy
Your trust matters to us as much as a good meal does. This page explains, in plain language, what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and the control you have over it.
Last updated: 24 July 2026
The details in square brackets below, such as our registered company details and the tools we use, need confirming before this page goes live so that everything here matches how we actually operate.
On this page
1. Who we are
Je Ka Jeun is a Nigerian food and culture tour in Peckham, south London. For the purposes of data protection law, the data controller is [registered company name], a company registered in England and Wales under company number [company number], with its registered address at [registered address].
If you have any questions about this policy or your information, you can reach us at info@jekajeun.com at any time.
2. What we collect
We only ask for what we genuinely need. Depending on how you interact with us, that can include:
- Details you give us directly. Your name and email address when you join our mailing list, and any message, dietary need or access requirement you send us when you get in touch.
- Booking details. When you book a tour through our booking partner, information such as your name, contact details, the tour and date you chose, and the number of guests. Payment is handled by the booking partner, and we do not store your full card details.
- Information collected automatically. Basic technical and usage information when you visit our website, such as your device type, browser and how you move around the site, gathered through cookies and similar tools.
3. How we use it
We use your information to:
- Take and manage your booking, and give you the details you need for your tour.
- Cater to your dietary needs and access requirements as best we can.
- Reply to your questions and messages.
- Send you news about upcoming dates, special editions and stories, where you have asked us to.
- Understand how our website is used so we can keep improving it.
- Keep proper records and meet our legal and accounting obligations.
4. Our lawful bases
Data protection law asks us to have a lawful basis for using your information. Ours are:
- Consent, when we send you marketing emails. You give it freely when you join the list, and you can withdraw it at any time.
- Performance of a contract, when we use your details to deliver a tour you have booked.
- Legitimate interests, when we do things like keep our website secure and understand how it is used, in a way that is reasonable and does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation, when we need to keep certain records for tax and accounting.
5. Email updates and Mailchimp
When you sign up for our updates, we manage our mailing list using Mailchimp, a service provided by Intuit. Your name and email address are stored securely on Mailchimp so we can send you the news you asked for. Mailchimp acts as our processor, which means it only handles your information on our instructions.
Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and one click is all it takes to leave. You are always in control of whether you hear from us.
6. Cookies and analytics
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to help it work properly and to help us understand how visitors use it, through [analytics tool, for example Google Analytics]. Some cookies are essential for the site to function, while others are optional and only used with your agreement.
You can manage or refuse cookies through your browser settings at any time. Turning some off may affect how parts of the site behave.
7. Who we share it with
We never sell your personal information, and we only share it where it is needed to run the experience or meet our obligations. That can include:
- Our booking and ticketing partner, [booking or ticketing partner], which processes your booking and payment.
- Trusted service providers who help us operate, such as our email provider Mailchimp and our website and analytics tools.
- Professional advisers, or authorities, where we are required to share information by law.
Where a provider handles your information on our behalf, they are only allowed to use it for the purpose we have set and must keep it secure.
8. Sending data outside the UK
Some of the providers we use, including Mailchimp, are based outside the United Kingdom. When your information is transferred abroad, we make sure it is protected by appropriate safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or equivalent contractual protections.
9. How long we keep it
We keep your information only for as long as we need it. Mailing list details are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them. Booking and financial records are kept for as long as the law requires, which for accounting purposes is usually six years. When we no longer need your information, we delete it securely.
10. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete.
- Ask us to delete your information, where there is no reason for us to keep it.
- Object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your information.
- Withdraw your consent to marketing at any time.
- Ask us to transfer your information to another provider where that applies.
To exercise any of these, just email us at info@jekajeun.com. We will not charge you, and we will respond within the time the law allows, which is normally one month.
11. Keeping it safe
We take sensible steps to protect your information from being lost, misused or accessed without permission, and we work with providers who do the same. No method of sending information over the internet is completely secure, but we treat your data with care and act quickly if anything goes wrong.
12. Children’s privacy
Our website and mailing list are meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the site. Where children join a tour, their details are provided and managed by the accompanying adult who makes the booking.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as our tours and tools evolve. When we do, we will change the date at the top of the page, and where the change is significant we will make it clear.
14. Contact us and complaints
If you have any questions, or you would like to exercise your rights, please email info@jekajeun.com. We would always prefer to sort out any concern with you directly.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK regulator for data protection, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would be grateful for the chance to help first, but that route is always open to you.
